“Follow the artists,” was the New York Theatre Workshop’s first instinct when they revamped their season last year. Thus, the Artistic Instigator grants were born—allowing artists to develop new theatrical work in new forms. They immediately thought of playwright Celine Song, whose show, Endlings, was prematurely cancelled due to the pandemic. Celine’s pitch: combine Chekhov’s The Seagull with The Sims 4 and stream it on Twitch. The concept proved to be an incredibly dynamic and interactive night at the “theatre” in a time when connection was needed most.
Watch as we hear from playwright Celine Song and NYTW’s Literary Director and Dramaturg Aaron Malkin and Producing Associate Yang-Yang Chen as they share this journey with us.
