Sam Pinkleton

Sam Pinkleton is a director and choreographer based in Los Angeles and New York City. On Broadway, his work includes Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award, as well as Amélie, Significant Other, The Heidi Chronicles, Machinal, and Heisenberg. As a director, his production of Runaways premiered at City Center Encores! Off-Center and was later produced at The Public Theater/Shakespeare in the Park. Other highlights include David Henry Hwang and Jeanine Tesori’s Soft Power (Public Theater/Center Theater Group – Lucille Lortel Nomination, Best Choreography), Untitled DanceShowPartyThing (Virgin Voyages – co-created with Ani Taj), Anne Washburn’s Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play (Playwrights Horizons), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Deutsche Oper Berlin), Kansas City Choir Boy (with Courtney Love) and new theater and opera productions with BAM, The Dutch National Opera, Oper Köln, American Repertory Theater, Center Theater Group, Soho Rep, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Theatre for a New Audience, The TEAM, Kansas City Rep, and McCarter Theater. Sam is a frequent collaborator with Pig Iron Theatre Company, The Civilians, and The Dance Cartel and was co-chair of the Obie Awards. He is on faculty at Princeton University and was artist-in-residence at Pace University in 2019. He does not own any dance shoes.
