RIP TORN appeared in Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth with Geraldine Page, The Glass Menagerie with Maureen Stapleton, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Barbara Bel Geddes and A Streetcar Named Desire; O'Neill's Strange Interlude, Anna Christie, and Desire Under the Elms with Colleen Dewhurst; in Hellman's The Little Foxes; and Strindberg's Dance of Death with Viveca Lindfors and The Father with Elzbieta Czyzewska and Meryl Streep. He also appeared in Baldwin's Blues for Mr. Charlie with Diana Sands and Ann Wedgeworth, Odets' The Country Girl with Jennifer Jones, Shepard's Seduced, Wesker's The Kitchen with Sylvia Miles, Mixed Couples with Julie Harris, Gelbers' Barbary Shore with Estelle Parsons, adapted from the Mailer novel, The Cuban Thing and The Night Shift. He directed Geraldine Page and Maya Angelou in Look Away. He won an Obie Award for his work in Mailer's Deer Park, and another for his direction of McClure's The Beard at the Evergreen Theater in New York, which he was invited to stage for the Royal Court Theatre in London and the Cite Universitaire in Paris. He directed Horowitz's Leader and The Honest-to-God Schnozzola, which won the Obie Award for Best Play. As Artistic Director for Sanctuary Theatre, he directed and acted in Miss Julie and Creditors, and Shaw's Village Wooing with Amy Wright. Last season for Sanctuary Theatre he directed Alexander's Strangers in the Land of Canaan with Angelica Torn. He appeared in the title role in Shakespeare's Macbeth, in Henry IV Parts I and II, Cymbeline, Much Ado About Nothing, and directed and appeared as Hamlet and Richard III (with Beatrice Winde). His nearly 50 major motion pictures include Beautiful Dreamers, Extreme Injustice, Critic's Choice, Summer Rental, Down Periscope, How to Make an American Quilt, Defending Your Life, Cross Creek (Oscar nomination), Tropic of Cancer, Heartland, Pay Day, King of Kings, Songwriter, The Cincinnati Kid, Maidstone, Coma, Sweet Bird of Youth (with Shirley Knight), Jinxed (with Bette Midler), Where the Rivers Flow North, Men in Black and Trial and Error. Television appearances include 24 Hours in a Woman's Life with Ingrid Bergman, as Carlo Ponti in Sophie: Her Life with Sophia Loren, as Walt Whitman in Song of Myself, Atlanta City Murderers and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Kim Stanley and Jessica Lange. Recipient of six Emmy nominations, last season Mr. Torn won an Emmy as Best Supporting Actor in The Larry Sanders Show. He also won an American Comedy Award and two Cable Ace Awards as Best Actor in a Comedy Series from the cable industry's yearly celebration.
