Ossie Davis
OSSIE DAVIS Born Dec. 18, 1917, died Feb. 4, 2005. Playwright, actor, director, and social activist. Book writer of Purlie 1970 Tony Award nominee for Best Musical based on his play Purlie Victorious. Broadway performing credits: The Zulu and the Zayda, Purlie Victorious, A Raisin in the Sun, Jamaica (1958 Tony Award Best Featured Actor nominee), The Wisteria Trees (1955 revival), Touchstone, Remains to Be Seen, The Green Pastures (1951 revival), The Royal Family (1951 revival), The Wisteria Trees, The Smile of the World, The Leading Ladie, Jeb (1946, Broadway debut). Wrote the play Paul Robeson: All-American. Wrote and directed films: Gone Are The Days, Cotton Comes To Harlem, and Countdown to Kusini. Worked with director Spike Lee on films: Do The Right Thing, Jungle Fever, She Hate Me and Get on the Bus. TV: Narrator of the early-1990s CBS sitcom Evening Shade, starring Burt Reynolds. Davis and wife Ruby Dee were recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004. They were also named to the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame in 1989.
