MARTIN GOTTFRIED was born October 9, 1933, in New York City. He graduated with a B.A. from Columbia University in 1955 and attended Law School, from 1955-57. He served in the U.S. Army, Military Intelligence, from 1957-59. He lives in New York City and is a member of New York Drama Critics Circle and the Dramatists Guild. He received Rockefeller Foundation grants in 1966 and in 1967; he received the George Jean Nathan Award for Dramatic Criticism, in 1968, for A Theater Divided. Gottfried has been a music critic for the Village Voice (1960-62); an editor for Fairchild Publications in New York City (1962-63); and a drama critic for Women's Wear Daily (1963-72), the New York Post (1973-77), the Saturday Review and Cue/New York.
