Lois Smith
LOIS SMITH made her film debut opposite James Dean in Elia Kazan's East of Eden. She had earlier begun studying with the legendary Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio and has since performed extensively in the stage, television and film mediums. Ms. Smith has twice been a Tony Award nominee, for her performances in productions of The Grapes of Wrath and Buried Child. Both of these productions originated at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company, of which she is a company member. Most recently, she starred in Harris Yulin's off-Broadway staging of Horton Foote's The Trip to Bountiful (Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Obie, and Lucille Lortel Awards), repeated later at Goodman Theater in Chicago. Earlier this season, she was in Amy Herzog's After the Revolution at Playwrights Horizons. Currently appearing in Signature Theatre Company's The Illusion by Tony Kushner. Her television appearances range from The United States Steel Hour (acting with John Cassavetes) and Naked City (opposite George C. Scott) to Frasier and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, among others. Her telefilms include Katja von Garnier's Iron Jawed Angels and Joseph Sargent's Skylark. Ms. Smith was cited as Best Supporting Actress by the National Society of Film Critics for her performance opposite Jack Nicholson in Bob Rafelson's Five Easy Pieces. Her dozens of film credits also include Sean Penn's Dead Man Walking and The Pledge; Steven Spielberg's Minority Report; Jan De Bont's Twister; Jocelyn Moorhouse's How To Make An American Quilt; Paul Mazursky's Next Stop, Greenwich Village; Daniel Petrie's Resurrection; Adrian Lyne's Foxes and Fatal Attraction; Bob Rafelson's Black Widow; Peter Weir's Green Card; Jon Avnet's Fried Green Tomatoes; Joel Schumacher's Falling Down; and, with Hollywoodland costar Diane Lane, John Madden's Killshot. At this year's Tribeca Film Festival, she appears in Michael Cuesta's Roadie. Other upcoming films include George LaVoo's A Dog Year, opposite Jeff Bridges and a yet to be titled film directed by Nicole Holofcener starring Katherine Keener.
