LISA DESPAIN is an award winning jazz composer including the ASCAP/IAJE Duke Ellington Commission, an Aaron Copland Fellowship, three American Composers Forum Commissions, a Barlow Commission, Artist in Residence at the O'Neill Theater Center, a Julius Hemphil Jazz Composers Award, and an NEA Jazz Fellowship. She has been commissioned by the New York Choral Society, the Cassatt String Quartet, the Northwest Indiana Symphony, and the US Air Force Bands. Her mulitple collaborations with dance legend Donlin Foreman (Joyce Theater, New Victory, Jacob's Pillow) have been heralded by The New York Times as "intoxicating" and "witty." She studied jazz piano under Ellis Marsalis and Eliane Elias. She is currently at work on a Broadway show set during the downfall of "Storyville" New Orleans during the dawn of the jazz age.
