HARVEY FIERSTEIN made his stage debut at La Mama in 1971 in Andy Warhol’s Pork, followed by appearances in more than 60 Off-off Broadway plays including work with The Playhouse of the Ridiculous, Negro Ensemble Company, WPA, and Theater Genesis. In Boston he starred in The Haunted Host, Dirtiest Show In Town & Madness Of Lady Bright. Mr. Fierstein then wrote and starred in his own plays including, Flatbush Tosca, Freaky Pussy, International Stud, Fugue In A Nursery, & Widows and Children First. His Torch Song Trilogy opened Off-off Broadway in 1980, transferred Off-Broadway in 1981 and then on to Broadway where Mr. Fierstein won two Tony and two Drama Desk Awards (best play and best actor in a play), an Obie, a Dramatists Guild Award and was nominated for the Olivier. Harvey repeated his award winning performance in Los Angeles and London. He won his third Tony Award for the book of La Cage aux Folles in 1984, and his fourth Tony as Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray. His other plays included Safe Sex, Spookhouse and Forget Him. Among his 30 film appearances are: Independence Day, Mrs. Doubtfire, Bullets Over Broadway, The Times of Harvey Milk, Death to Smoochy, and Tidy Endings (Ace Award), The Sissy Duckling (Humanitas Award). Other TV work includes, ?Cheers?(Emmy Award nomination), Ellen, Common Ground (also co-wrote), The Simpsons and Elmo Saves Christmas. Mr. Fierstein is also a regular commentator on PBS’ In the Life. His children’s book, The Sissy Duckling was published by Simon & Schuster.
