G. W. MERCIER (Set Design). On Broadway, Mr. Mercier designed Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass by Julie Taymor and Eliott Goldenthal at the Vivian Beaumont, for which he was honored with a Tony and two Drama Desk nominations. Off-Broadway, Dream True by Tina Landau and Ricky Ian Gordon and Bed and Sofa by Polly Penn and Lawrence Klavan procured him two additional Drama Desk nominations. Regionally, The Ballad of Little Jo by Mike Reid and Sara Slessinger and directed by Tina Landau at Steppenwolf in Chicago and 1933 adapted by Brock Seawell and Randall Myler for The Denver Center kept him busy. Since 1984, Mr. Mercier has been a key figure at the National Playwrights Conference, helping writers visualize a world for their work.
