Carol Channing
CAROL CHANNING recipient of the 1995 Lifetime Achievement Tony Award, has been a star since 1950 when a Time magazine cover story hailed her performance as Lorelei in Gentleman Prefer Blondes, writing "Perhaps once in a decade a nova explodes above the Great White Way with enough brilliance to reilluminate the whole gaudy legend of show business." Since then, her countless honors have included a Tony award or nomination for every Broadway show in which she has appeared, an Emmy Award and four additional nominations, an Oscar nom., a Golden Globe Award, a Best Nightclub Act of the Year Award, a Hasty Pudding Woman of the Year Award and an appearance on Nixon's "hate list," which she numbers among her greatest honors. Since her 1948 Broadway debut in Lend An Ear (Theatre World Award), her Broadway credits have included Wonderful Town, Four on a Garden, The Vamp and Show Girl. Her greatest Broadway triumph came in 1964 with Hello, Dolly!, for which she won a Tony Award (against such competition as Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl). She has since played the role in nearly 4,500 performances - including a smash London engagement - without missing a single one. Her most recent theatrical assignments were tours of Jerry's Girls and Legends, in which she co-starred with Mary Martin. Ms. Channing's happiest film project was Thoroughly Modern Millie, which set box office records and earned her an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe Award. Other films include Otto Preminger's Skidoo (which she refuses to see), Archie and Mehitabel and, Thumbelina. Ms. Channing has starred in six television specials, winning an Emmy for George Burns and Carol Channing. For her numerous recordings, including her Broadway shows, Ms. Channing has received ten gold albums and her original cast album of Hello, Dolly! is the all-time best-seller in its field, even knocking the Beatles off the chart when it was released in 1964. Her latest album is Jazz Baby on DRG Records. When not performing in theatre, Miss Channing has appeared in every major nightclub and concert hall in the country.
