A. R. GURNEY has written many plays that include Scenes from American Life; The Dining Room; The Middle Ages; The Cocktail Hour; Love Letters; Later Life; Sylvia; Far East; Ancestral Voices; Big Bill; and Mrs. Farnsworth. He has also written three novels, a few television scripts, an occasional unproduced movie, and the libretto of Strawberry Fields, a one-act opera composed by Michael Torke which was performed by the New York City Opera. He has received a number of awards and was recently inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame. He has honorary degrees from Williams College and Buffalo State University, and taught literature at M.I.T. for many years.
